Email Scam Alert!
Late in 2013, numerous businesses were sent fake CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS with a tricky LINK to CryptoLocker. This malware is a Trojan horse type which spread a form of ransomware targeting computers running Microsoft Windows. Apple and other platforms are immune. CryptoLocker hides and disguises itself as a legitimate attachment; when double-clicked, the malware encrypts mostly business and important files stored on local and mounted network hard drives using RSA public-key cryptography, having the private key stored only on the malware's control servers. The malware "pops up" a message which offers to decrypt the data if a payment of ususlly $300 is sent through either Bitcoin or a pre-paid voucher, before a stated deadline. The notice says that the private key will be deleted and unavailable for recovery if the deadline passes. If the deadline is not met, the malware offers to decrypt data via an online service provided by the malware's operators, for a significantly higher price in Bitcoin.
While CryptoLocker itself is easily removed, files remain encrypted in such a manner that researchers consider it not prudent to break. Many researchers and victims state that the ransom should not be paid, but do not offer any way to recover files; others say that paying the ransom is the only way to recover files not previously backed up.
As the ransom "key" may not work or be unreliable, the FBI says a disk format and re-write from a good backup is the only solution.
*******************************************************************************************************
Yet another scam depends on YAHOO email to ruin old Email accounts, which it readily does by claiming that the user who started the Email, sometimes as long ago as 2002,,,is not accessing the account from the appropriate source so the password will no longer work.
******************************************************************************************************
People who see the "YAHOO" helpsite (PHONY) will think that Yahoo wants to HELP them and DOWNLOAD a VIRUS SOFTWARE which appears to put as many as 9000 infected files on YOUR COMPUTER or INFECT over 9000 files already there. The COMPUTER EXPERT who MESSAGES YOU PERSONALLY may be in India, Nigeria or WHEREVER but the scam is the same....he will offer to clean up your files for $300 which is LESS than Microsoft.
*******************************************************************************************************
IF YOU instead run SEARCH and DESTROY and delete the connection, the COMPUTER EXPERT sees what you are doing and tries to ASSURE YOU that this will not WORK.
******************************************************************************************************
Fortunately, the file RENAMER is harmless like many MUSIC file RENAMERS and the WOULD-BE VICTIM can escape.
******************************************************************************************************
IF the COMPUTER EXPERT had been a REAL ATTACKER, the software he TRICKED the VICTIM into DOWNLOADING MIGHT have wiped out the hard drive data or xaused some other SERIOUS MISCHIEF. The VICTIM was EXTREMELY LUCKY!
******************************************************************************************************
Always scan downloads with AVAST! or Search and Destroy which are FREE programs from someone loke CNET or TWO COWS.
